It is the town's main monument and one of the few Baroque palace-and-garden ensembles in Romania.
About the place
The ensemble dates from the second half of the 18th century; the national monuments list gives 1750–1800 for the palace, designed by architect Johann Eberhard Blaumann. The palace stands on a terrace 12 m above the Olt valley. The estate covers 15.5 hectares, with a French garden, an English garden and an orangery.
Under communism the building was a sanatorium and a maternity ward. From 2011 it was renovated and reopened by the Samuel von Brukenthal Foundation for the Evangelical Church of Avrig. The palace holds a museum of more than 1,100 objects from Avrig's former glassworks.
