It is the heart of the old town and the stage for big events, from the theatre festival to the Christmas market.
About the place
The square dates from 1366, when the third ring of walls was completed, and is the largest square in the old town. Markets, assemblies and even executions took place here. Around it stand the Brukenthal Palace, the Roman Catholic church and the City Hall.
The Council Tower, between the Main and Small Squares, has been closed since January 2026 for restoration expected to take about two years.
Good to know
- The Council Tower cannot be climbed until restoration ends.
- In the evening the square is lit and fills with people.
- Look up at the small roof windows, the 'eyes' of Sibiu.
