It is the town's main monument, with a double wall, a moat and a tower you can climb.
About the place
The church began as a three-aisled Romanesque basilica. After Ottoman attacks, the ring wall was fortified from 1430, and a second wall, defence towers and a moat were added. The tower has had a clock since 1425, and in 1795 it got a lightning rod, the first in Transylvania according to the Fortified Churches Foundation.
You can climb wooden ladders up the tower to the bells, with a view over red roofs towards Cisnădioara. The tower holds the Museum of Ten Centuries, with one object for each century, and a small museum of communism is in the grounds. The church was restored between 2014 and 2020 with EU funds.
